ARTFUL LODGER, Newport – A Smart Stay in the City
About the Hotel
Historic Downtown Inn
The Artful Lodger Inn is located in the heart of Newport's historic downtown, adjacent to the famous Cliff Walk, a three-and-a-half-mile pathway with ocean views and historic mansions. The Victorian house features antiquated details like steep winding stairs and narrow halls.
Unique Rooms & Suites
Every room at the Artful Lodger has individual décor and a private bathroom. Some rooms include a gas fireplace, mini refrigerator, and private porch. The Chinese Marriage Bed suite features an enclosed porch, outdoor deck, and spa bath. Most bathrooms are small with standing showers.
Breakfast with Harbor Views
A free homemade breakfast is served daily from 8:30 - 10:00 AM in Pip's Cafe on the third floor, offering views of Newport Harbor and Fort Adams. Menu includes freshly baked muffins, eggs, waffles, and pancakes. Guests can request breakfast delivered to their room or outdoor seating.
Gardens & Outdoor Spaces
The Inn has two garden areas with wrought iron furniture, ivy-covered trellises, and ponds. The back garden is home to a 140-year-old magnolia tree registered with the National Registry of Historic Trees. Guests can relax on the front porch facing Spring Street or in the Lily Pond area with a trickling fountain.

Guest Ratings & Reviews
My stay at the hotel was fantastic! The rooms were perfect in every way - comfortable, clean, and spacious. We also enjoyed spending time on the wonderful first-floor front porch with friends. However, there was a slightly overpowering smell of air freshener, noticeable when coming back inside, although it became less noticeable over time. The service was top-notch, with a very friendly and accommodating staff that added a delightful community feel to our experience. The location was ideal, within walking distance of all the local tourist sights and just minutes away from the action along Thames Street. The dining experience was delicious, with cooked-to-order meals served in the penthouse overlooking the water, providing a fabulous view.
I absolutely loved my stay at this hotel! The rooms were beautifully decorated with lots of little amenities that made my stay extra special. The hot tub and fireplace were a real treat, and despite the building being on the older side, they did a great job in accommodating for its age. The room was a bit cold at first but quickly warmed up, providing a cozy atmosphere.
My stay at the Artful Lodger was wonderful with cozy and clean rooms, a big comfy bed, and a peaceful atmosphere. However, the hotel could do with some updating as it had an old-fashioned feel and a musty smell. On the plus side, the breakfast was excellent and they even had a bathtub, which was a nice touch.
